For the first time in its history, the museum is dedicating a comprehensive solo exhibition to Paul Cezanne (1839–1906), a pioneer of modern art and a key artist in the museum’s collection. Around 80 paintings and watercolours offer a condensed insight into Cezanne’s late work, including mysterious portraits, atmospheric depictions of bathers, landscapes shaped by a longing for
Provence and breathtaking views of the Montagne Sainte-Victoire. Cezanne’s works impressively show how the master painter struck a powerful balance between light, colour and form, changing the world of painting for ever; it was not without reason that Picasso described him as the ‘father of us all’.
