The Hotel DuPeyrou – was built in the 18th century (1765 – 1771). It is named after its creator, Pierre-Alexandr DuPeyrou. A frenchman by birth, born in 1729 in Suriname (Dutch Guiana), where his father served as a judge on the Court of Justice. Upon his father’s death, his mother remarried a man from Neuchâtel, a Mr. de Chambrier. When Mr. de Chambrier and his wife decided to return to Europe the young Du Peyrou followed them and settled in Neuchâtel where he was granted citizenship in 1748.
Originally this sumptuous building stood amid vineyards and its gardens stretched all the way down to the lake. Alexandre Du Peyrou had no children and died in 1794. His mansion was sold to a Mr. Frédéric de Pourtalès in 1799. Then, with the onset of the Napoleonic era, the residence was acquired by the state for the country’s new ruler, Marshal Berthier. When Frederick William III, King of Prussia, once again became Prince of Neuchâtel, he informed the State Council that he could not retain ownership of this mansion. The government then sold it to Mr. Denys de Rougemont in 1816. Finally, the city of Neuchâtel acquired the property in 1858 and had its salons restored. Recently the city council renovated the gardens that are open to the public.
