Our third discovery trip takes us to Aarau, the capital of the northern canton Aargau. It is a German-speaking town.
The town of Aarau was founded between 1240 and 1250 by the Counts of Kyburg and in 1248 is first mentioned as Arowe. In 1273 the Counts of Kyburg died out.
Agnes of Kyburg, who had no male relations, sold the family’s lands to King Rudolf 1 von Habsburg.
In 1415 Bern invaded lower Aargau with the help of Solothurn.
As we are having our usual guided tour, I will leave the rest of the history to the tour guide.
One characteristic of the city is its painted gables, so Aarau is also known as the “City of Beautiful Gables”.
After lunch we can take the time to look around the shops or perhaps revisit something of interest from the tour.
