Our after lunch speaker, Matthew Kahane, who was brought up in Rome, worked for the UN Development Programme from 1970-2008 in Tunisia; Iran; HQ in New York responsible for programmes in Democratic Kampuchea, DPR Korea, Laos and Viet Nam; Siri Lanka (peace keeping force), Western Samoa; Belarus (opened the first UN office in the former Soviet Union); Poland (transition to Nato membership); Tajikistan and Nepal 2008 to 2015 various missions, essentially in former Soviet central Asia and the Caucasus and Bulgaria.
