Welcome / Past Events / All Past Events / North-East Region / The Sunken Mysteries of Osiris

A group of us met in the shady gardens of the Rietberg Museum on 15 June for an informal lunch before our guided tour of the Osiris exhibition, the story of Osiris, the Egyptian god of rebirth. Our guide was excellent – engaged, informed and fluent – we could not have done better. This spectacular exhibition, which has just moved from London, shows 300 statues and ritual objects, sarcophagi and idols from sixteen centuries retrieved from the depths of the Mediterranean off the Egyptian coast. The exhibits originate from the legendary cities of Thonis-Heracleion and Canopus, which became submerged in the 8th century AD. Some of them would not have looked out of place in a contemporary gallery. Our guide drew our attention to the differences between the Greek and the Egyptian styles – fascinating.

Our thanks go to Diana Divo for having had the idea to visit the exhibition and for her organization.
