Welcome / Past Events / All Past Events / Ticino & Grisons Region / WATERFALL GARDEN, VICO MORCOTE

Again we were blessed with a fine day for our Garden visit over looking Lago Ceresio, the lakeside villages at the foot of Monte San Giorgio with the back drop of Monte Generoso.
The BRA treasurer Peter, having made an early start, joined us from Geneva, we were also joined by four neighbours from Vico Morcote.
Before starting our walk, Amelia gave us a short talk on how her father came to create a garden in southern Switzerland.
We were accompanied by Rose-Maie, who having produced a book about the garden knows many of it‘s secrets. Areas damaged by the severe winds in recent years have been opened up and the under planting was today glowing in the Spring sunshine.
Despite long periods of drought, fluctuating temperatures and vicious winds the perfume from the daphne, the exquisit beauty of the camellias, the variation of the majestic magnolias and the tender shoots of the tree peonies, are a constant reminder of how special this garden is, thanks to the knowledge and foresight of Sir Peter Smithers who in 1972 created his dream in Ticino.
Our visit drew to a close around a table of delicious refreshments and a moment to exchange photos and gardening tips.
Grateful thanks to our gracious hosts Sheila and Adolf, who every year offer us their generous hospitality so we can continue enjoying Sir Peters dream.
